OBER BOYS HIGH SCHOOL

Academic Excellence

Quality Education, Holistic Development, and Digital Innovation at Ober Boys High School

REMARKS FROM THE OFFICE OF THE DEPUTY PRINCIPAL – ACADEMICS

Mr. Joshua Nyabinda - Deputy Principal Academics, Ober Boys High School

At Ober Boys High School, academic excellence remains the foundation upon which our institution stands. As a school, we recognize that education is not merely about passing examinations, but about equipping learners with knowledge, skills, values, and competencies that prepare them to thrive in life beyond the classroom. Our shared responsibility as teachers, students, parents, and stakeholders is to ensure that every learner entrusted to us receives the highest quality education possible....

We currently find ourselves at a historic moment in the Kenyan education system. We are simultaneously concluding the 8-4-4 curriculum while implementing the Competency Based Education (CBE) framework. This transition presents both challenges and opportunities. It demands adaptability, innovation, and collective effort. At Ober Boys High School, we have embraced this transition with clarity of purpose and a strong commitment to excellence. Our vision as the Academic Department is clear: to establish Ober Boys High School as a center of academic and competency excellence where every learner achieves their full potential through discipline, consistency, innovation, and integrity.

Strengthening Academic Excellence in Form 3 and Form 4 As we wind up the 8-4-4 system by 2027, our immediate academic priority remains the success of our Form 3 and Form 4 learners. These students represent the final cohorts of the KCSE system, and we are determined that they complete their secondary education strongly, confidently, and competitively. To ensure this, we have adopted deliberate and practical strategies. We continue to emphasize structured and timely syllabus coverage across all subjects. Departments work with detailed schemes of work, lesson plans, and monitoring schedules to ensure that no content is rushed or omitted. Completing the syllabus early allows sufficient time for revision, consolidation, and focused exam preparation. Continuous assessment plays a central role in our approach. Regular tests, assignments, and examinations are used not only to award marks but to diagnose learning gaps. Through data analysis, we identify areas of weakness and design timely interventions. Remedial lessons, small group tutorials, and personalized support programs ensure that no learner is left behind. Revision programs are carefully organized and sustained. These include supervised morning and evening preps, weekly revision sessions, exposure to past examination papers, holiday academic clinics, and departmental consultations. We believe that consistent practice builds mastery, confidence, and examination readiness. Equally important is academic discipline. Punctuality, attendance, completion of assignments, and responsible use of study time are expectations that guide our learners daily. A culture of seriousness and self-drive remains central to our success. Through these combined efforts, we aim to maintain strong KCSE performance while ensuring that learners develop resilience, responsibility, and a strong work ethic.

Embracing the Competency Based Education (CBE) Framework While strengthening 8-4-4, we are equally committed to the successful implementation of the Competency Based Education system. With Grade 10 already in place, we are steadily aligning our teaching practices to meet the demands of this learner-centred approach. CBE shifts the focus from memorization to mastery of skills and competencies. It encourages critical thinking, creativity, collaboration, communication, and problem-solving. As a school, we are redesigning our teaching strategies to reflect these principles. Our classrooms increasingly promote active learning through projects, research tasks, group discussions, presentations, and real-life problem solving. Learners are encouraged to explore ideas, innovate, and apply knowledge practically. Assessment now extends beyond written examinations to include portfolios, performance tasks, and continuous feedback. Teachers continue to receive professional development through workshops, peer learning, and curriculum training to ensure they are well prepared to facilitate competency-based learning. Our goal is to create engaging classrooms where learning is meaningful, interactive, and relevant to the modern world.

Supporting the Three Pathways Ober Boys High School proudly offers all three Senior School pathways: STEM, Social Sciences, and Arts and Sports Science. We recognize that learners possess diverse strengths and aspirations, and we are committed to nurturing each pathway with equal importance. In the STEM pathway, we are strengthening laboratories, practical lessons, innovation projects, and technology integration. Learners are encouraged to engage in scientific inquiry, coding, robotics, engineering concepts, and problem-solving activities that prepare them for careers in science and technology. In the Social Sciences pathway, we continue to cultivate critical thinking, research skills, leadership, debate, and civic awareness. These disciplines help learners understand society, governance, history, and global issues while building strong communication and analytical abilities. In the Arts and Sports Science pathway, we actively promote creativity, performance, talent development, and physical fitness. Sports, music, drama, visual arts, and creative expression are recognized as powerful avenues for growth, discipline, and career development. By supporting all pathways, we ensure that every learner finds purpose, identity, and opportunity within our institution. Building a Culture of Continuous Improvement Excellence is not a one-time achievement; it is a continuous process. At Ober Boys High School, we are intentionally building a culture that values professionalism, collaboration, and accountability. Departments work together to share best practices, develop common assessments, and support one another. Regular performance reviews help us evaluate progress and adjust strategies where necessary. We celebrate achievement while remaining honest about areas that require improvement. Learner motivation is enhanced through recognition of academic effort and success. Awards, certificates, and positive reinforcement encourage healthy competition and inspire learners to aim higher. Guidance and counseling services remain integral to our work. We understand that emotional well-being and mental health directly affect academic performance. By supporting the whole learner, we create an environment where students feel safe, valued, and capable of succeeding.

Leveraging Technology and Partnerships Technology continues to play an important role in modern education. We are steadily integrating digital tools, e-learning platforms, research resources, and academic data systems to enhance teaching efficiency and broaden access to knowledge. Beyond the classroom, we value strong partnerships with parents, alumni, institutions of higher learning, and community stakeholders. Regular communication and collaboration strengthen our support system and expose learners to mentorship, career guidance, and real-world opportunities. Education is most effective when it is a shared effort. Conclusion As we reflect on our journey, we remain confident in the direction we are taking. By strengthening Form 3 and Form 4 performance, embracing Competency Based Education, supporting all pathways, and fostering a culture of discipline and innovation, we are positioning Ober Boys High School as a true center of excellence. Our commitment is collective. Our responsibility is shared. Our success depends on teamwork. Together, we shall continue to nurture competent, confident, and responsible young men who are prepared not only for examinations, but for life, leadership, and service to society. Ober Boys High School remains dedicated to excellence today and into the future.
